David Bache Photographed the Burlington Gardens set. This collection of photographs were taken in the gardens that surround Chiswick House in West London, England. Created by Lord Burlington in 1725, their design was inspired by the architecture and gardens of ancient Rome. Buildings and obelisks are placed at the ends of avenues in the Baroque manner. Classical busts, sphinxes, an amphitheatre and several small pavilions help to re-create the landscape of antiquity. William Kent added classical illusions by designing a rustic cascade and a gently serpentined canal.
